Why I Write?

Perhaps, the most recurring inquiry about my novels is their lack of a definite ending. I would like to take some time and explain the reason. The standard novel consists of a beginning, middle and end. Furthermore, the better novels of this scheme are judged by whether or not the main characters undergo some psychological transformation during the tale. This has been the hallmark of most great novels, probably since their Ivanhoe inception. Accordingly, faulting generations of writers, emulating this scheme, is difficult.

Why do I intentionally omit substantive endings?

If we merely look at the uplifting character of the beginning-middle-end novels, we can appreciate their benefit to society. Novels are written for entertainment and to make their readers fell good about life. Despite the make-believe nature of novels, their readers do internalize their messages. Many readers commence living their lives according to what they read. Without question, one is hard-pressed to discount the affect of a good novel upon the career intentions of young readers. I suppose each reader can point to a novel that affected his/her outlook upon life.

What could be wrong with this picture?

One of the issues facing our society is voter apathy as well as a disregard for community involvement in disturbing issues. Although the press does all it can to publicize disturbing issues, most readers prefer to sit on the sidelines. Why? In my post-structuralist studies, one of my research areas was contextualism. In contextualism (from the Bahktin sense), our individuality is reduced to a shared-experience amongst our community: We evolve into contextualized individuals … we become walking, talking stories. Our individual identity becomes affixed to our resume or bibliography. We regurgitate the sayings of our shared experience in community. We are not original in any manner.

If this Bahktinian notion has merit, then we could be sitting on the sidelines of disturbing issues, as well as politics, because we want to know the outcome, before we take a side. Succinctly, we do not know the ending, so we do not act. The recent Virginia Tech massacre could be reduced to just such a scenario. Think this statement over carefully. Do we not act just in such a manner?

Why do we do it?

It is my belief that we straddle the sidelines of life, because we have internalized the standard novel to the point where it has overwhelmed our individual identities and altered our perception of our lives into reliance upon the novel scheme. We have become little novels!

In an attempt to counter the standard novel scheme, internalized within our readers, I write without substantive endings in order to allow the readers to experience the decision making and courage of the characters without knowing the outcomes of those actions. Also, I omit the usual psychological baggage that accompanies most characters in order to highlight their dependence … addiction … to the shared experience of the community … their internalized contextualization.
